Only after eight week of school I feel that I have learn a lot.  I have especially learn a lot when writing analytical essays.  I now know the difference between analyzing essays and summarizing them.  I think my expectation of English 102 have been meet, and I think I have meet the expectation of what is expected from a English 102 student.  The most challenge I have had in this class is definitely essay #3.  The reason I had trouble with this essay is because I found it difficult to try to relate two different peoples lives with one event that went on in history and also trying to find evidence that ties all theses things together.  Overall this has been a good learning experience that I can use in the future.

I am planning to use this site to show the military backround of Sean Huze.  The reason I want to use the background of Sean Huze is so I can show reasons why he decided to write this play.  Also with this site I will grasp a better understand of his life.

This site is a interview with Sean Huze.  Here he talks about his feeling on The Sandstorm.  What he went through in the Iraqi War and how he feels about the U.S soldiers being there.  I'm going to use this site to make my essay stronger by talking about day to day events Sean Huze went through in this war.

            “He was a citizen and a soldier”(125,O’Brien).  Out of all the passage we were able to read I choose to write about “The Man I Killed”.  It is a short passage in the novel  The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien.  This passage really caught my attention because O’Brien decided to repeat himself three times.  When the main character looked at this man’s body, who he just killed, he saw just a normal person.  He saw a man who had dreams of being a Mathematician.  I believe the main character saw a normal citizen just like him, who had to go to war, who had dreams and had a family waiting for him at home.  Throughout the passage this man realized how small the body was,  I think he felt terrible for taking this man’s life away.  He was a small Vietnamese man who never was violent and was picked on for having such a dainty figure.  Even though the main characters friend told him that it was going to be alright, he knew it wasn’t alright.  The main character possibly could have seen himself laying their dead.  This was probably the first man he has ever killed, I believes this because Tim O’Brien repeats himself about how mangled this body is.  I definitely enjoyed this passage, and when I get a better understanding for it maybe then ill be able to understand why O’Brien continues to repeat himself.

             When comparing both these stories to the poems I wrote about last week, I noticed a lot of similarities.  I also noticed a bigger similarity between the two essays that I read.  After reading both essays I came to the conclusion that both writers enjoy writing about depressing things that happened and that is happening in the world we live in.  These writers wrote about some of the same stuff such as, World War 2.  The difference between both these writers in my opinion is that Sam Himill used more factual evidence and statistics than Carolyn Forche essay. Sam also had some experience when he talked about people being incarcerated and how it feels to be locked away.  He also talked about being a Marine and what is expected from you.  When I compare these essays to the poem I wrote about I noticed some similarities.  I wrote my essay on the poem called “Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting”. This poem was about love and how this soldier misses the love of his life.  Obviously this poem and Sam’s essay are related because they both wrote about being in the Military.  Also all three pieces of writing were depression and had no happy or cheerful moment throughout all the writing I read. 

            I agree with everything they had to talk about.  Most was factual evidence that you can’t argue with or it was writing about emotion.  I don’t think I can agree or disagree when it comes to matters of emotion because some people try not to have any emotion at all and others wear there feeling on there selves.  But I can understand some of the emotion they were feeling or the reasons why they felt that way.  All in all I didn’t really enjoy the writings but I enjoyed the poem.

Responce to Two Poems

  I read every poem that was on the Poetry of Witness and most of them didn't give me any feelings, no emotion mostly just confusion.  After reading all the poems I came to the conclusion that I am just not fond of poetry, or at least I haven't found too many poems that touch me, but I will take a stab at it.  Out of all the poems the two I felt most compelled to write about is “Immigrants in Our Own Land” by Jimmy Santiago Baca and “Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting” by Kevin C. Powers.

            The reason why I enjoyed the second poem “Letter Composed During a Lull in the Fighting” is because when I first read it I had no idea what was even going on.  I had to read the poem a dozen times before I could make any connection to the text, but I grew to enjoy this poem more and more each time I read it.  I liked and felt emotion for the poem because I think he is saying goodbye to the women he loves because he doesn’t think he will make it back home.  The other poem I read is “Immigrants in Our Own Land” I also felt some strong emotions for this poem.  This poem makes me feel anger because I think people are trying to change but they are forced to do something they don’t want to do, also I feel sad for the people in this poem who feel like they are stuck and how they think there is no other choice.  This poem is still a little confusing because the title of the poem is misleading.  But I still do not know what poem I will choose to write about for the next essay.  I have good ideas on how to analyze both of these poems and I do feel emotion for both.  Maybe after a little more thinking one will stand out more than the other. 

Blog Post #2, Summary and Analysis

    

       I believe the difference between summary and analysis is pretty black and white.  Some people may not know the difference between the two simply because they do not understand what they mean.  The summary of a story is taking a book or basically anything with a storyline and wrapping it all up.  In a summary you usually only talk about the beginning, key points through the story and the end.  We use summary in almost everything we talk about, some examples are movies, sports or telling someone how your day went.  Now, analysis is completely different then summary, it is when you look at reasons why events happen and how they occurred also if you were to analyze something you would have to look at every little detail that happened because one detail can change everything.  Take for example, your telling someone how your day went, if I was to use a summary I would say key points or interesting things that happened, but if I was to analyze my day and tell it to someone I would have to focus on every second of that day from when I woke up to when I went to sleep.
